The Sekama student internship brings together students, university staff, farmers, and agricultural professionals to learn from one another through practical experience.
Dr. Ndaula Sulah, Head of Agricultural Sciences at Kampala International University (KIU) and Sekama Canada’s Country Director in Uganda, welcomed Steve, a Canadian farmer, to the group. Steve will visit Uganda in August to meet the students and learn more about agriculture and farming in Uganda.
The group includes seven KIU students, along with Ms. Joyna (Joy) Ofungi, an Animal Science lecturer, and Ms. Elizabeth (Liz) Abongo, Manager of External Learning in the School of Natural and Applied Sciences.
Steve encouraged the students to share what they are working on, including their research, projects, and experiences on the farm. He hopes to learn from their work before arriving in Uganda and looks forward to meeting everyone in person.
For the School of Natural and Applied Sciences, the collaboration with Sekama is an opportunity to give students practical, community-based training that goes beyond the classroom. Ms. Abongo described the partnership as an important opportunity for students to learn the skills and practices needed to help move agriculture beyond subsistence farming and toward greater productivity.
The internship is built on a simple idea: students learn best when they can connect classroom knowledge with real-world experience. Through this exchange, students are not only gaining practical agricultural skills, but also learning from farmers, professionals, and international partners.
