This week at Penah Mixed Farm, we took part in several activities focused on improving the farm and strengthening our practical skills.
We started by maintaining the farm’s live fence. Because much of the farm is protected by a natural fence, we replanted new sections using lukoni to help keep animals and intruders from entering.
In the banana plantation, we replanted banana suckers to improve spacing and create a more uniform plantation. We also learned about pests, bacteria, and diseases that can affect bananas, including the risks of using infected tools or planting diseased suckers.
We also planted a variety of vegetables in the gardens we prepared two weeks ago, including cabbages, carrots, courgettes, spinach, lettuce, and green peppers.
The week also included pasture management, giving us a broader understanding of how different parts of a farm work together.
Through these activities, we are learning that successful farming is not just about producing crops and animals. It also requires good planning, maintenance, disease prevention, and careful management of farm resources.
