Taking early action to prevent calf diseases is one of the most effective ways to avoid economic losses on your farm. Calf illnesses can slow growth, reduce future performance, increase treatment costs, and even lead to calf death.

Recognizing the early signs of common calf diseases—like respiratory illness, diarrhea (scours), and umbilical infections—can be difficult, especially because symptoms often start off subtle. That’s why it’s important to have a plan in place. When you and your staff actively monitor calves and respond quickly to the first signs of illness, you can reduce the impact these diseases have on your herd.

Want to learn more? Listen to this podcast with Dr. Dave Renaud, veterinarian, researcher, and expert in calf health at the Ontario Veterinary College. He shares practical tips and proven strategies to help you keep your calves healthy from the start.
