Buying extra hay or feed can be expensive. But there is a simple solution that many farmers around the world are using – rotational grazing.

Instead of letting cows roam over the whole farm, rotational grazing means dividing your land into smaller plots (paddocks). The cows eat in one paddock while the others rest and grow back. After a few days, you move the cows to the next paddock, and the first one has time to recover.

This small change can make a big difference.

How to Get Started

1. Do your pasture math

Work out how many animals you have and how much land is available.

Example: 10 cows on 20 acres. If you divide it into ½-acre paddocks, you can rotate for about 40 days. Adjust based on the grass growth and weather.

2. Plan for water

Cows need clean water wherever they graze. You can use simple mobile troughs, pipes from ponds, or tanks. Remember: no water, no feed, no weight gain.

3. Move at the right time

Shift cows when grass reaches 8–10 inches tall. This gives the pasture time to regrow and also breaks the parasite cycle.

4. Use cover crops

Plant crops like radish, sorghum, or even maize stalks after harvest. They provide extra food and improve soil health.

5. Learn from neighbors

Every farm is different. Share ideas with other farmers or extension workers. The best systems are the ones adapted to your land.

Read more at Farmtario

When the dry season comes, grass often runs short, and farmers struggle to feed their animals.
