Sekama Canada Ltd. is a social enterprise that brings together Canadian knowledge and experience with smallholder farmers and cooperatives in the Global South. Our goal is to improve agricultural productivity, support sustainable practices, and strengthen rural communities. We focus on practical partnerships that deliver real, long-term results. Here’s how we do it:
Digital Peer Learning for Farmers
We run an active WhatsApp group that connects over 30 Ugandan farmers and cooperative leaders. It’s a low-cost platform where members share advice, ask questions, and learn from each other in real time. Topics include tick control, feed formulation, and milk value addition. Experienced animal health specialists support the group, making it a trusted space for learning and collaboration.
Farmer-Led Processing Projects
We support farmer cooperatives like Kabula Farmers’ Co-op Society in Uganda to design and launch small-scale processing facilities, such as milk powder plants. Sekama helps with feasibility studies, business planning, and preparing funding proposals, turning local ideas into investment-ready projects. These efforts boost farmer incomes, reduce food waste, and bring affordable, nutritious products to schools and communities.
Smart Livestock Health Tools
Sekama is working with global tech partners to develop wearable sensor systems for cows and other livestock. These microchip sensors monitor body temperature, feeding habits, movement, and location in real time. Farmers would receive alerts that help them detect early signs of disease, reduce animal deaths, and improve milk production. We would also provide training so farmers can use the data effectively and confidently.
Volunteer Placements & Knowledge Exchange
Through our Local and Global Volunteer Program, Canadian and Ugandan farmers, students, and professionals travel to farms for hands-on placements and mentorships. They share knowledge on topics like animal care, milk hygiene, and farm planning, while learning from the everyday experiences of local farmers. These exchanges promote mutual respect, new ideas, and better farm practices on both sides.
Student Field Learning & Research
Sekama offers practical field placements for university students studying agriculture, veterinary medicine, or international development. Students work alongside farmers to tackle real problems, gather data, and create training materials. Both Ugandan and international students learn from each other, building teamwork, innovation, and cross-cultural understanding.
